ACM Awards forgot their roots

Growing up, I remember sitting in front of the TV watching the ACMs, CMAs, (insert other country music award show acronyms here), etc. The 80s were about big hair, big shoulder pads and lots of sequins. The 90s were leggings, smaller shoulders, smaller hair and a few less sequins. The 00s (double aughts) were certainly less dressy--often T-shirts and torn jeans for the guys, and everyone had a hat. But the one thing they had in common was music, COUNTRY music. Sure it tended to get pop-ish, but it had country stars singing country songs.

Fast forward to the the 10s--the awards are still there, they still use country in the titles--but the country is starting to get harder and harder to find. Last night's awards show is a perfect example. Apparently someone decided to revamp the show with "duets," not an uncommon occurrence, as there has been a vocal collaboration award for a long time. And these have crossed genres occasionally. But last night's mishmashes of Rihanna with Jennifer Nettles and Carrie Underwood with Steven Tyler should have stayed in the brainstorming room. The Rihanna and Nettles song might have been better if you could have heard the first part of the song (which Rihanna sang). The title "California King Bed" and the ensuing explanation of distances between lovers in said bed, is typical country music fodder. It could have worked...but it didn't. FAIL

The Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler "duet" was a more of a yelling match throughout "Undo It" and continued into "Walk this Way." I admit, I am not a big Underwood fan, and "Undo It" positively grates on me, but I do like "Walk this Way," usually... except for last night's version, which was relatively painful. FAIL

When the awards show opened with "Old Alabama," a new song featuring Brad Paisley and ALABAMA (one of the greatest music making groups of all time), I knew it was going to be down hill from there....

IT WAS...

Actually, the rest of the show was up and down like a hilly road. There were a few redeeming moments--Blake Shelton's new song "Honey Bee" (including a chorus paying homage to Conway and Loretta) and Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" will be this year's summer anthems, along with "Old Alabama." Darius Rucker's performance with ACM Lifting Lives music campers was inspirational and uplifting. Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, and Reba McEntire showed the girls could "bring it" too.

And the down hill moments were interspersed throughout... I am so tired of Lady Antebellum--at first they were good, kind of a breath of fresh air, but they have put out maybe 5 songs total to country music in the five years they have been around, so consequently, we keep hearing the same five songs. And The Band Perry-- wow, not sure what I could say, but stay in school kids... get that degree...

Until the ultimate drop off into a canyon...

Taylor Swift won Entertainer of the Year.

This used to be a coveted award. It has been won by the country music pioneers and greats such as:
Merle Haggard, Roy Clark, Lorretta Lynn, Alabama, Hank Williams Jr., Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Mickey Gilly, Kenny Rogers, Barbara Mandrell, Mac Davis, Freddie Hart, Garth Brooks, Brooks and Dunn, Reba McEntire, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith....

and Shania Twain, the Dixie Chicks, Carrie Underwood, and now... Taylor Swift.

Apparently the actual ability to sing is no longer a necessity to win the award. Of course the award winner was based on fan vote, including voting by text. So unfortunate. But hey, at least Cover Girl is finally getting through to her on how to put on eye makeup...

Product review

So I tried Revelon "Just Bitten" lip stain. Stain is the operative word--it lasts long, like all day plus, but that is about the only plus. The color doesn't match the outside--thought I was getting a nice bronzy color ("Twilight") and it turned out to be a berry red. The "lip balm" is already out about a half inch and will not go back in to the tube. The color does not go on well--part of the lip is very dark and the rest is not colored at all. I have it, so I will use it--maybe--but will not get it again and do not recommend it.

WHY is Taylor Swift the new face of CoverGirl?

Nope, I am not sure either...goes along with the rest of her "dream come true" life style pattern....

Can't sing
Can't act
Can't put on makeup

Seriously, isn't CoverGirl supposed to be "easy and breezy." Most of the time you can't see her eyes due to the amount of whatever she puts on them. Maybe she was taken as a charity case, "Sure Taylor, you can be a CoverGirl....(and we can finally teach you and the boys in your band how to apply eye makeup)"

How sad, and what a slap in the face to the models and the celebrities that actually have talent.

Of course, how sad for Taylor that she is being used for her name and fame...a special line of cosmetics in her name--Tween consumer sales are going to SKYROCKET-

Boys and Girls can you say CASH COW....I knew you could.

Kentucky Derby

Looking at the pictures of the Kentucky Derby today, there are a number of women with plastic bags over their faces, in order to protect their hats--doesn't seem like a good idea to me...

Amazing Race16 episodes 7 and 8

Episode 7 Didn't have an elimination--darn good thing, Jet and Cord came in last :( .... Order of the teams were:

Steve & Allie--won the leg at the cost of losing their packs ie clothes, grooming items etc.
Dan & Jordan
Brent & Caite
Louie & Michael
Carol & Brandy
Jet & Cord --bad luck...just plain bad luck

Episode 8

Jet & Cord--completed a different road block than ANY of other teams, had a speed bump, and STILL won the leg! (Note: Steve and Ali attempted the road block, but gave up very quickly to do the other one.)

Carol & Brandy -- a perfect example of the stereotype of the "angry lesbian" -- both of them. Not seeing this relationship last after the race. I think at this point, what is being shown, they have already made up their mind to finish the race "as a couple," but that is the end of it.

Louie & Michael -- Louie's asthma may be what does this team in.

Brent & Caite -- They are right up there with the lesbians as the teams that need to leave soon. At least they can realize how mean the lesbians are too---it is "anonymous" (seriously?!)

Dan & Jordan -- Really hope they make it into the top three.

According to Wikipedia, the next two episodes are entitled:

"Dumb did us in"

"I Feel Like I'm in, Like, Sicily"

"Dumb did us in" This sounds like something just about any of them would say...except maybe Brett and Caite, based on the statement, "I Feel Like I'm in, Like, Sicily," which sounds exactly like something one of them, in particular Caite, would say. "Dumb did us in" is likely uttered at the pit stop check in point. Unfortunately the more I think about it, it sounds like something Louie and Michael or Jet and Cord would say. Hopefully I am wrong and it is neither one of these teams...

Steve & Allie--He was getting extremely tired, and it was starting to show. Bad choices or incomplete decisions were being made on a regular basis. She kept trudging along, but was starting to get whiny.

Jordan & Jeff -- They started going downhill, and it went quickly. It was quite apparent by the end that he especially was tired. She may not have moved quickly enough to suit him, but she did keep trudging along. Sad to see them go--there are a couple of other teams that should have gone before them. But at least now Shannon will have some company closer to her own age.

Joe & Heidi -- Due to a "U-Turn" they are gone! Thank you Louie and Michael--thank you, thank you, thank you. I do feel sorry for the other teams at the elimination station because now they have to put up with him. He thinks they kicked him while he was down--why eliminate someone who was hurt? BECAUSE you were OBNOXIOUS, rude, arrogant, egotistical, and just a jerk in general.

Monique & Shawne -- They didn't stand out. They were nice enough, but they kept falling into "the middle of the pack." They were the third team eliminated.

Jody & Shannon--I really liked this team. They were both extremely positive and upbeat. Unfortunately they were eliminated in episode 2.

Dana & Adrain--They didn't really have a chance, as they were eliminated the first show.

Amazing Race

Episode 6

The teams are now arranged in the order of their arrival to the check in station. The elimated teams are separated at the bottom.

Louie & Michael -- The detectives continue on their streak. They keep crediting the detective lifestyle for their luck and it seems to be the reason.

Carol & Brandy -- I talked recently to a friend of mine, who would also normally like the lesbian team, however NOT this one...They need to go SOON!

Steve & Allie -- After crashing a car into a curb, we now know that Duct tape WILL fix anything, including plastic bumpers rubbing against a wheel. They are getting tired though, and it is starting to show.

Jet & Cord -- Leg 6 was not a good one for the Okie boys--they got lost 2 or 3 or 4 times... They still managed to do fairly well, once they figured out where they were.

Dan & Jordan -- I like this team--they have grown on me. Unfortunately, it is possible they will be gone soon. They dont' seem to have the "street smarts" of some of the other teams, nor the common sense of the others. They may make it in the top 3 though.

Brent & Caite -- They are whiny, indecisive, arrogant individuals and they need to go home. Neither one can make a decision, but are too ready to complain if the other one suggests something. Brent also REPEATEDLY makes this weird face that is obnoxious.

Amazing Race Episode 5

Episode 5

The teams are now arranged in the order of their arrival to the check in station. The elimated teams are separated at the bottom.

Louie & Michael -- The detectives came in first again! They seem to have the hang of it now.

Steve & Allie -- I have previously called them "a sleeper team." They have checked in as the second team for three consecutive legs. They seem to take it as a personal affront that Louie and Michael U-turned Joe and Heidi.

Jet & Cord -- Still my favorite team. They are sincere and good natured to each other and to the rest of the teams.

Dan & Jordan -- They got automatic transmissions and did much better. They are slowly moving up in the ranks...two 8th places, two 6th places, and now a 4th place finish.

Carol & Brandy -- Mean, bitter people. Apparently it makes them feel better to constantly put other people down.

Brent & Caite -- They didn't do too bad, and they are still growing on me. She more so than him.

Jordan & Jeff -- He is mean to her and puts her down. Apparently "in it to win it" includes calling your partner names "a four year old," saying she is pouting, and continually giving her a hard time.
